Winter Fire Safety

Stay safe and warm during the cold months

Winter Fire Facts

  • • Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires.
  • • Half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February.
  • • Space heaters account for one-third of home heating fires and 80% of heating fire deaths.

Space Heater Safety

  • Keep 3 feet of clearance around all space heaters—away from curtains, bedding, furniture, and anything that can burn.
  • Plug directly into an outlet—never use an extension cord or power strip with a space heater.
  • Turn off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Place on a flat, hard surface—never on carpet, rugs, or near water.
  • Choose heaters with safety features like automatic shut-off and tip-over protection.

Fireplace & Wood Stove Safety

Before the Season

  • • Have chimneys inspected and cleaned annually.
  • • Check the damper to ensure it opens and closes properly.
  • • Install a chimney cap to prevent debris and animals from entering.

During Use

  • • Use a sturdy fireplace screen.
  • • Burn only dry, seasoned wood.
  • • Never burn paper, trash, or cardboard.
  • • Let ashes cool before disposing in a metal container.

Furnace Safety

  • Have your furnace inspected and serviced by a qualified technician each year.
  • Replace furnace filters regularly (monthly during heavy use).
  • Keep the area around your furnace clear of flammable items.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors near bedrooms and on each level.

Generator Safety

  • Never use indoors—including garages, basements, and enclosed porches.
  • Place generators at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent.
  • Let the generator cool before refueling.
  • Store fuel in approved containers away from living areas.
