Winter Fire Safety
Stay safe and warm during the cold months
Winter Fire Facts
• Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires.
• Half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February.
• Space heaters account for one-third of home heating fires and 80% of heating fire deaths.
Space Heater Safety
Keep 3 feet of clearance
around all space heaters—away from curtains, bedding, furniture, and anything that can burn.
Plug directly into an outlet
—never use an extension cord or power strip with a space heater.
Turn off when leaving
the room or going to sleep.
Place on a flat, hard surface
—never on carpet, rugs, or near water.
Choose heaters with safety features
like automatic shut-off and tip-over protection.
Fireplace & Wood Stove Safety
Before the Season
• Have chimneys inspected and cleaned annually.
• Check the damper to ensure it opens and closes properly.
• Install a chimney cap to prevent debris and animals from entering.
During Use
• Use a sturdy fireplace screen.
• Burn only dry, seasoned wood.
• Never burn paper, trash, or cardboard.
• Let ashes cool before disposing in a metal container.
Furnace Safety
Have your furnace inspected and serviced by a qualified technician each year.
Replace furnace filters regularly (monthly during heavy use).
Keep the area around your furnace clear of flammable items.
Install carbon monoxide detectors near bedrooms and on each level.
Generator Safety
Never use indoors
—including garages, basements, and enclosed porches.
Place generators at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent.
Let the generator cool before refueling.
Store fuel in approved containers away from living areas.
